Micro Magnetics Receives Frost & Sullivan Excellence in Technology Award in Spintronics

Fall River, MA – December 21, 2006 - Frost & Sullivan selected Micro Magnetics, Inc. as the recipient of the 2005 Excellence in Technology Award in the field of spintronics, in recognition of the company’s significant contributions toward the development of innovative spin-based magnetic sensing solutions in the areas of semiconductor metrology and magnetic sensing, and for its contributions to spintronics in general. The following is Frost & Sullivan’s description of this award.

“The evolution of spintronics is expected to significantly impact two applications in particular: magnetic spinbased nonvolatile memories (sometimes referred to as the ‘holy grail of spintronics’) and magnetic sensors. Giant magnetoresistance (GMR) was one of the first spintronic effects to find commercial application, and ever since IBM pioneered their usage, GMR sensors have been used on read-write heads of hard disks. Presently, almost 95% of all hard disk drives use GMR heads, which has led to significant improvement in storage density and access speed. Another similar effect is based on the magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) phenomenon, which is produced by two layers of magnetic metals. MTJ-based technology is catching up and starting to find applications in the field of data storage. MTJ devices have for long promised to display room temperature magnetoresistance values, which are even larger than those exhibited by GMR structures, particularly in the presence of small magnetic fields. This could have a significant role to play in the development of nonvolatile memory storage cells to replace conventional capacitive storage. In its more sophisticated form these devices could take advantage of the spin polarization and enable devices such as the spin transistor. MTJ devices are also suitable for field sensing applications under a variety of operational conditions.”

“Micro Magnetics was founded in 1998 with the aim of furthering the use of ultrasensitive, high-resolution magnetic sensors for semiconductor metrology. Micro Magnetics has obtained an exclusive license from Brown University for technology transfer, and has introduced a high-resolution scanning magnetic microscope that provides current density images of operating integrated circuits.”

“Having pioneered product development in the magnetic sensing arena, Micro Magnetics has now evolved into developing processes for development of discrete components. Micro Magnetics also provides custom services in the fabrication of MTJ structures for different applications, such as magnetic field sensing, magnetic random access memory, nondestructive evaluation, and biomagnetic sensing.”

“Micro Magnetics is also developing the process for fabricating micrometer-scale and sub-micrometer MTJ sensors with low noise, high sensitivity, and large magnetoresistance. Micro Magnetics’ MTJ sensors could be integrated across a variety of semiconductor processes, microelectromechanical systems and microfluidic devices.”

“It is clear that Micro Magnetics has been a key player in fostering the growth and evolution of MTJ device technology. In short, Micro Magnetics pioneered the development of truly novel processes and products that have the potential to redefine the landscape of magnetic sensing and has led the way in the commercial fabrication of MTJ field sensing devices. Because of such reasons, Micro Magnetics Inc. has been recognized with the Frost & Sullivan Award for Excellence in Technology.”
