Scientists developed novel handheld magnetometer probe for intraoperative sentinel lymph node identification using Micro Magnetics' STJ sensors
Fall River, MA - June 8, 2015 - Using Micro Magnetics' STJ Series magnetic tunneling junction (MTJ) sensors,
scientists from Ian Wark Research Institute of University of South Australia have developed a novel handheld magnetometer
probe for bio-medical application, specifically for the identification of the sentinel lymph node. The STJ-based probe has
showed excellent spatial resolution of 4.0 mm, and the potential to detect as few as 5 g of magnetic tracer. Using the
STJ-based magnetometer, scientists have identified all first-tier sentinel lymph nodes in the preclinical experiments with
no false positive or false negative detection. The authors also suggest that the STJ-based magnetometers can be used
not only for breast cancer and melanoma, but also for more complex cancer types such as oesophageal,
or other deep tissue cancers of the abdomen. The research has been published by Nature's Scientific Reports, downloadable
